On Saturday, the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Ahmed Al Yamahi, called for urgent national consensus in Libya to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking during the second plenary session of the Arab Parliament’s fourth legislative term, Al Yamahi emphasized that resolving Libya’s political crisis is essential for ensuring the country’s security, stability, and unity.
The Arab Parliament reaffirmed its full support for all Arab-led initiatives, particularly those by the League of Arab States, that aim to address the challenges facing Libya and the broader Arab region.
The Speaker also stressed that sustainable and lasting solutions must come from Arab efforts, free from foreign interference. He warned that external actors are seeking to exploit the resources of Arab nations and meddle in internal affairs, making it imperative for the Arab world to take the lead in solving its own crises.
He also expressed the Arab Parliament’s readiness to use all available diplomatic tools to back the League of Arab States in fostering stability in Libya. The session also highlighted the importance of intensifying Arab efforts to resolve ongoing regional conflicts and reaffirmed the Parliament’s commitment to supporting Libyan reconciliation.
Libya has remained in a state of political and security turmoil since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gaddafi. The country is divided between two rival administrations: the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, and the eastern-based administration, led by Osama Hammad.
Disputes over electoral laws and constitutional frameworks have stalled the elections initially scheduled for December 2021. This prolonged crisis has heightened instability, with Libyan citizens increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress.
