Flash Flood Warning Issued for South Libya

On Monday, the Libyan National Center of Meteorology warned of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding across southern Libya. The regions of Sebha, Edri, Al-Shati, Mahrouga, Ubari, Murzuq, and nearby areas are expected to face moderate to heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, starting late Monday and continuing through Wednesday.

The center cautioned that the intense rainfall could lead to flash floods, the rapid flow of water in valleys, and a rise in water levels in low-lying areas. Some locations may experience localized flooding. By Wednesday, the rain system is expected to move northeast, spreading rainfall to the Gulf region.

Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise caution, avoid riverbeds and flooded roads, and stay updated on weather advisories issued by authorities. Infrastructure in many parts of southern Libya, particularly in valleys and low-lying areas, remains vulnerable to sudden and severe flooding.

Earlier, the meteorological center forecasted scattered rainfall across western Libya, warning of heavy downpours and thunderstorms in some areas. Southwestern Libya is also expected to experience significant rainfall starting late Monday evening.

Southern Libya’s geography, marked by valleys and basins, makes it especially susceptible to flash floods. Sudden and heavy rains can quickly transform dry riverbeds into fast-moving torrents, creating dangerous conditions for nearby communities. The lack of robust drainage infrastructure compounds the risks, leading to widespread disruptions and damage.

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Libya highlights the need for stronger infrastructure and early warning systems. The National Center of Meteorology has urged residents to remain vigilant, prioritize safety, and follow official updates closely.
