The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent appeal for $106.6 million to address the growing needs of Sudanese refugees in Libya.
In its latest report on humanitarian operations for November 2024, the organization revealed that it provided food assistance to 9,500 Sudanese refugees who fled their country due to the ongoing conflict.
WFP distributed 57 metric tons of food to these refugees despite logistical challenges, including delays in customs clearance and shipping.
However, the organization warns that much more is needed to sustain and expand these efforts. The report highlights an immediate requirement for $19.8 million to cover six months of operations from December 2024 to May 2025, alongside a comprehensive funding plan for 2025, totaling $106.6 million.
Of the total amount, $13.5 million is urgently needed for general food assistance programs, focusing on critical nutritional needs for children under five, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. These funds are essential to prevent malnutrition and support the health of vulnerable populations.
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has forced millions to flee their homes. Many have sought refuge in neighboring countries, including Libya, which shares a porous southern border with Sudan. Libya has become a key destination for displaced Sudanese, placing significant strain on local resources and humanitarian organizations.
The influx of refugees comes at a time when Libya is still recovering from its own internal conflicts. Refugees often arrive in dire conditions, requiring immediate aid such as food, shelter, and medical care.
However, logistical challenges and funding gaps have hindered the ability of organizations like WFP to fully meet these needs.
The WFP has been pivotal in addressing food insecurity in Libya, focusing on displaced Libyans and refugees alike. The latest appeal underscores the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for additional resources to continue providing life-saving assistance.
The refugee crisis in Libya is a stark reminder of the broader regional instability caused by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The WFP’s funding appeal reflects the scale of the challenges ahead. Without immediate support, the situation risks deteriorating further, jeopardizing the lives of thousands of refugees.
The $19.8 million needed for short-term operations is critical to sustaining current efforts, while the $106.6 million multi-sectoral plan for 2025 aims to establish a more sustainable response.
The international community is being urged to step up its contributions to prevent further suffering and to stabilize the situation in Libya.
Libya’s proximity to Sudan and its role as a regional hub make it a key player in the humanitarian response.
However, the country’s limited capacity, coupled with its political and economic challenges, means international support is essential. Coordinated action will be necessary to ensure that Libya can manage the crisis effectively while addressing its own recovery.
The World Food Programme’s appeal highlights the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing the Sudanese refugee crisis in Libya.
As the conflict in Sudan continues, the number of displaced individuals seeking refuge in Libya is expected to rise. Sustained international assistance is crucial to meet their needs and to support Libya in managing this complex humanitarian emergency.
