Libya Moves Closer to Unified Government Under UN Mediation

On Monday, Italian expert Daniele Ruvinetti, a senior advisor at the Italian Med-Or Foundation, has indicated that Libya may soon witness the formation of a unified government under the mediation of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

According to Ruvinetti, Stephanie Khoury, the acting head of UNSMIL, is expected to announce the creation of a dialogue committee in the coming days. This committee will aim to unite Libya’s divided political factions and chart a path toward national elections.

Ruvinetti explained that the committee will tackle critical constitutional issues and facilitate dialogue among Libya’s key political players.

The ultimate goal is the formation of a unified government capable of leading the country through its transitional phase and organizing long-awaited elections. The initiative is expected to attract international backing, with the European Union, the United States, and regional powers likely to support Khoury’s plan as a means to overcome Libya’s prolonged divisions.

The US position could be a decisive factor in the success of the UN’s plan, Ruvinetti said. He emphasized that Washington’s involvement would compel other nations to engage seriously in the stabilization process, given America’s significant influence in global affairs. The Italian expert described the situation as a potential turning point in Libya’s fraught journey toward stability, which has been obstructed by persistent internal divisions.

Libya has faced years of turmoil since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with rival governments, militias, and regional actors vying for power. The creation of a unified government represents a critical step forward in resolving the current political impasse. However, success will depend on the willingness of Libya’s various factions to engage in dialogue and compromise, as well as the commitment of international actors to the process.

As Libya stands at a crossroads, the proposed UN-backed dialogue committee could mark the beginning of a new phase of reconciliation and progress. Whether this initiative will succeed in overcoming the deep-seated divisions remains to be seen, but the potential for a unified government offers a glimmer of hope for a country long plagued by instability.
