The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has reported the abduction of civil rights activist Ahmed Omar Indara, alongside his colleague Ali Al-Ahwal and citizen Magdi Al-Musli, in the early hours of Friday.
Armed individuals from a local security agency in Misrata detained the trio, reportedly due to Indara’s social media post calling for peaceful protests against normalisation with Israel.
The NIHRL’s fact-finding team has also documented the arrest of several activists and citizens involved in protests in Tripoli, triggered by the former foreign minister’s remarks on normalising relations with Israel.
The institution has expressed grave concern over the arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances of these individuals, calling it a clear violation of fundamental human rights, particularly the right to freedom of expression.
The NIHRL is urging the interim Government of National Unity to promptly release all detainees, ensuring their protection from inhumane treatment.
It has called for a full investigation into the incidents and accountability for those responsible. The institution further emphasised that all arrests must adhere to legal procedures in line with Libya’s criminal laws and international human rights standards.
The NIHRL reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rule of law, human rights protection, and the right to peaceful protest. The government is urged to uphold constitutional and international obligations, ensuring that no individual is subjected to unlawful detention or enforced disappearance.
