Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday the appointment of Abdelkrim Rekibi as the new Algerian Ambassador to Libya. He will succeed the current ambassador, Slimane Chenine, according to a statement released by the ministry and reported by the official Algerian news agency.
The statement confirmed, “The Government of Libya has approved the appointment of Mr Abdelkrim Rekibi as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the State of Libya.”
Abdelkrim Rekibi, a seasoned diplomat with decades of experience in international relations, takes over from Slimane Chenine, who served as Algeria’s ambassador to Libya from December 9, 2021, until January 20, 2025.
Rekibi’s extensive career includes prominent positions within Algeria’s diplomatic framework. A graduate of the Algerian National Institute for Security Studies (1998) and the diplomatic branch of the National School of Administration (1985), he has held numerous roles across economic, cultural, and legal sectors.
His career highlights include serving as First Secretary for Economic and Cultural Affairs at Algeria’s Embassy in Dar es Salaam (1991–1995), Diplomatic Advisor for Benelux relations (1995–1999), and Economic Affairs Advisor at Algeria’s Embassy in Libya (1999–2003).
Rekibi also served as Deputy Consul General in Casablanca (2006–2010), Minister Counsellor in Iran (2013–2018), and Minister Plenipotentiary in Algeria’s Directorate for Arab Countries (2018–2019). Most recently, he was Algeria’s Ambassador to Lebanon (2019–2022) and Director of the Mashreq and Arab League Affairs at the Foreign Ministry in 2024.
