The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, emphasised the importance of achieving unified and legitimate institutions and holding national elections in Libya. His remarks came during discussions with the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The meeting focused on the EU’s potential role in resolving Libya’s political crisis and addressing divisions while maintaining stability. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Orlando underlined the EU’s commitment to supporting Libyan stability and political progress.
“We will explore opportunities to enhance cooperation through EU programmes, including improving the management of Libya’s southern borders,” Orlando stated. He also reaffirmed the EU’s full support for the newly appointed UN Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh.
The European Union has consistently backed UN-led mediation efforts and remains committed to achieving a sustainable political solution through inclusive dialogue among Libyans. This stance was reiterated by the EU spokesperson in a recent statement welcoming Tetteh’s appointment.
Tetteh, Ghana’s former Foreign Minister (2013–2017), previously served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for the Horn of Africa. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in addressing regional challenges, earning praise for her diplomatic expertise.
The EU’s continued engagement highlights its commitment to fostering stability in Libya and ensuring progress toward national reconciliation and development.
