The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Libyan House of Representatives, Youssef Al-Agouri, held talks with the Spanish Ambassador to Libya, Javier García-Larrache, and his accompanying delegation to discuss key political and economic developments, as well as avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting, which took place at the House of Representatives headquarters in Benghazi, underscored the historical ties between Libya and Spain. Al-Agouri commended Spain’s role in supporting Libya’s stability and emphasized the interconnected nature of security between Libya and Spain, urging the European Union (EU) to take a more active role in curbing foreign interference in Libya and ensuring that the Libyan people can exercise their democratic rights through free and fair elections.
Addressing irregular migration, Al-Agouri highlighted the urgent need for enhanced coordination between Libya and the European Union to manage the unprecedented waves of migrants crossing the Mediterranean. He stressed that this crisis presents a significant challenge for all parties involved and requires a collaborative regional strategy.
Al-Agouri also reaffirmed that the House of Representatives has fulfilled its legislative duties by enacting the laws governing parliamentary and presidential elections, as well as the constitutional referendum. He reiterated the Parliament’s stance that all foreign forces and mercenaries must leave Libyan territory to pave the way for genuine national sovereignty.
Economic Development and National Reconstruction
Discussing Libya’s economic future, Al-Agouri stressed the importance of development initiatives and emphasized the need to accelerate national reconstruction efforts. He advocated for the establishment of a Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, which would oversee infrastructure projects, economic recovery, and national unity efforts.
“Development is a top priority for the House of Representatives,” Al-Agouri stated, adding that Libya’s armed forces continue to play a pivotal role in combating terrorism and securing the nation’s borders from human traffickers and criminal networks. He highlighted the leadership of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), in maintaining national security and protecting Libya’s territorial integrity.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the Libyan military has been at the forefront of the global fight against terrorism, acting as a defender of peace and development. He noted that Libya’s national security is deeply linked to European and regional security, reinforcing the need for stronger international cooperation in ensuring long-term stability.
For his part, Ambassador Javier García-Larrache reiterated Spain’s commitment to supporting Libya’s peace efforts and affirmed his country’s backing for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue their diplomatic coordination and dialogue on various issues, emphasizing the need for sustained bilateral cooperation to promote stability, security, and economic growth in Libya.
