The Emergency and Support Medical Centre in Kufra announced on Tuesday the discovery of 64 migrant bodies in the desert south of the city over the past five days. The centre’s office reported that initially, 60 bodies were discovered, but further investigation revealed an additional four, bringing the total to 64.
The incident involved teams from the forensic medicine department, as well as representatives from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority, all operating under the supervision of the Public Prosecution.
The bodies were recovered, autopsied, and necessary samples were taken before being buried in a designated area.
This follows the discovery on Saturday of 59 migrant bodies by the Criminal Investigation Department, a week after the Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority in southeastern Libya unearthed 30 bodies from a mass grave in the Kufra desert. Earlier, two days prior, the Wahat Security Directorate announced the recovery of 19 bodies linked to smuggling and irregular migration activities from a mass grave on a farm in the Ajdabiya region.
These tragic discoveries highlight the growing issue of irregular migration through Libya, often resulting in deadly consequences for migrants attempting to cross the perilous desert routes.
