Two Libyan parliamentarians, Youssef Al-Fakhri and Saleh Qalama, participated on Tuesday in a significant joint meeting of committees within the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) in Midrand, South Africa.
The joint session involved the Committees of Agriculture, Rural Economy, and Natural Resources, Justice and Human Rights, and Social Affairs and Youth, coinciding with the activities of the PAP’s standing committees from February 18 to February 28.
During the meeting, participants reviewed a paper presented by the Director-General of the African Climate Change Alliance, focused on developing a unified vision to address climate change challenges across the continent. Discussions also included an evaluation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), launched in 2005, assessing its strategic outcomes nearly three decades after its inception.
Furthermore, the committees examined a special report on food systems in Africa, highlighting the operational strategies adopted by the African Union Commission (AUC) for food security and the strategic roadmap of the AU Commissioner for Agriculture. Particular attention was given to preparations for the upcoming African Food Summit scheduled in the following months.
This joint meeting underscores the collaboration between the Agriculture, Rural Economy, and Natural Resources Committees, which oversee the technical and legislative aspects of AU agricultural initiatives, and the Committees on Justice and Human Rights, and Social Affairs and Youth. Their shared goal is to ensure equitable, inclusive, and effective implementation of agricultural development programs benefiting all segments of African society.
