Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced on Saturday that a total of 248,787 voters have registered for the upcoming municipal elections in 62 targeted municipal councils. The commission continues preparations to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process.
According to HNEC’s media office, the registered voters include 184,006 men and 64,781 women. The commission has been working to increase voter participation, particularly among women, by encouraging broader engagement in the electoral process.
The municipal elections are a crucial step in Libya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local governance and democratic institutions. International organisations and diplomatic missions have expressed their support for Libya’s electoral process, emphasising the need for fair and transparent elections that reflect the will of the people.
Libya’s municipal councils play a key role in local governance, overseeing service delivery and development projects in their respective areas. The upcoming elections are expected to pave the way for improved administration and citizen participation in decision-making.
HNEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting the elections in line with international standards, ensuring accessibility for all eligible voters.
Last week, German Deputy Ambassador to Libya, Sven Krauspe, met with the Chairman of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, to discuss preparations for the second phase of municipal elections in Libya. The meeting focused on ensuring the electoral process adheres to the highest standards of transparency and credibility.
According to a statement released by the German Embassy in Libya, Krauspe reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting democratic processes in the country. He emphasised the importance of strengthening local governance through fair and transparent elections, highlighting Germany’s role in assisting Libya’s electoral institutions.
The Libyan municipal elections, which are being conducted in phases, are seen as a critical step toward decentralisation and improved governance. The first phase was completed successfully, and authorities are now working to organise the second phase under the supervision of the HNEC.
