The United Nations has warned of a possible humanitarian catastrophe in Libya. This is due to the current military buildup around Sirte, and the rapid spread of COVID-19. The UN has indicated that more than 125,000 people in and around Sirte were at risk.
According to the Deputy Spokesman of the United Nations, Farhan Haq, COVID-19 is spreading throughout the country. There have been more than 3,800 cases, and 83 deaths reported so far.
He pointed out that the ability to accurately test and treat patients nationally was still very low as the main focus areas are Tripoli and Benghazi. Haq explained that the lack of fuel and long daily powercuts are exacerbating the terrible living conditions of the Libyan people.
