On Thursday, the United Nations Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, met with Belgian Ambassador François Dumont to discuss the need to advance Libya’s political process and hold general elections as soon as possible.
During the meeting, both diplomats highlighted the importance of the continued political stagnation in Libya and the urgent need to restore legitimacy through a democratic vote.
According to a statement from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), both sides exchanged views on the current political climate and the importance of creating the necessary conditions for credible and inclusive national elections. They reaffirmed that moving forward with the electoral process is essential to achieving lasting stability in the country.
Beyond elections, the discussions also touched on key issues affecting Libya’s future, including irregular migration, restrictions on civic space, and the role of civil society.
Both parties emphasized the importance of safeguarding public freedoms and maintaining open civic engagement as part of any sustainable political solution.
Another major topic of the meeting was Libya’s public financial management. The UN mission highlighted the need for a more transparent and accountable system that serves the Libyan people and helps rebuild confidence in national institutions.
The call for financial reform comes amid ongoing concerns about corruption, mismanagement, and the unequal distribution of state resources.
This meeting is part of continued international efforts to support Libya’s democratic transition and encourage institutional reform.
