The Anti-Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Bureau in Benghazi successfully thwarted one of the largest drug trafficking operations in the city, following a precision-led operation based on accurate intelligence.

Authorities arrested a suspect born in 1989 and residing in the Bou Dzeira area, who was caught in the act while attempting to sell a significant quantity of narcotics.

The raid resulted in the seizure of 4,280 tablets of the narcotic “Tamol X 225”, along with half a “passport” of hashish and multiple pre-cut portions ready for distribution. Also confiscated were drug-packaging tools, including a specialized knife used for cutting and wrapping the substances.

Security forces had closely monitored the suspect’s movements as part of an extended surveillance effort. A carefully orchestrated ambush led to the arrest, with the suspect caught red-handed.

All legal procedures were immediately initiated, and the Public Prosecution has launched a broader investigation to uncover others linked to the drug distribution network.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
