Egypt has reaffirmed its support for the United Nations’ role in Libya, stressing the importance of maintaining international and regional coordination to advance the country’s political process and ensure long-term stability.

The announcement was made by Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, following a meeting between Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of Tetteh’s first briefing to the UN Security Council regarding her new mandate in Libya.

During the discussion, both sides reviewed the latest political developments in Libya and exchanged perspectives on ways to support a comprehensive, Libyan-owned political process that leads to a durable solution to the crisis.

Ambassador Abdel Khalek reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), emphasising that sustained international and regional coordination is essential to moving the political track forward and fostering lasting stability.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.
