On Monday, General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, declared that southern Libya has entered a new chapter of peace, stability, and opportunity.
Speaking during the launch of a series of development projects in the city of Murzuq, Haftar described the region as a “haven of stability” ready to attract local and international investment after years of marginalization and conflict.
Haftar inaugurated several service and infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of 1,500 housing units and the upgrade of key institutions such as Fezzan University and the Sebha Model Hospital.
The initiatives also include major improvements to power grids, water infrastructure, and public facilities, reflecting a broader effort to reintegrate the south into the national development agenda.
The ceremony, held in Murzuq, was attended by Prime Minister Osama Hammad, senior military officials, ministers, and tribal elders. Haftar praised the resilience and sacrifice of the region’s people, saying the new projects are a “symbolic repayment” for their role in the fight against terrorism. “Murzuq was once a disaster-stricken city,” he said. “Today, it is writing a new page of growth—because of its people.”
Haftar emphasized that the success of the Murzuq reconciliation process, which enabled the return of displaced residents, was key to enabling this new phase of development. “We will not allow instability to return,” he warned.
He also sent a message to potential investors, stating that southern Libya is rich in resources and ready for business. “This region is now a safe, investable environment,” Haftar declared, calling on local authorities to preserve progress and serve their communities.
The event concluded with a tour of ongoing military and civil infrastructure works, where Haftar reviewed progress and reaffirmed his commitment to a long-term vision of development for Libya’s south.
