On Wednesday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed serious concern over recent political and security developments, warning Libyan stakeholders that unilateral actions risk deepening divisions and undermining the fragile progress toward national elections.
In an official statement, UNSMIL urged all political and security actors in Libya to refrain from taking individual steps that could derail consultations, disrupt fragile stability, or exacerbate institutional fragmentation.
The mission highlighted that Libya’s prolonged transition has been characterized by competing authorities and parallel processes, often driven by unilateral decisions that lack broad consensus.
The UN emphasized that continuing this approach will only fuel further fragmentation of the state and make it more difficult to reach a sustainable political solution. Instead, it called on all actors to commit to constructive, inclusive dialogue aimed at building a unified political framework that would pave the way for national elections that are credible, inclusive, and accepted by all parties.
UNSMIL reiterated that elections represent the most legitimate and peaceful path toward restoring stable governance and fulfilling the Libyan people’s demands for unity, representation, and peace. The mission also warned that actions taken outside the spirit of cooperation and consensus may undermine the legitimacy of institutions and delay the transition even further.
The UN’s appeal comes at a time of heightened political maneuvering and growing concerns over potential confrontations between rival authorities or armed factions. The mission stressed that it remains committed to supporting a Libyan-led process, but cautioned that only genuine cooperation among all parties can produce a viable roadmap to elections and long-term peace.
UNSMIL concluded its statement by urging all sides to act responsibly, prioritize national interest, and work collectively to overcome political deadlock through compromise, dialogue, and mutual respect.
