Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s commitment to a political solution in Libya during a meeting in Cairo with Massad Boulos, the senior advisor to US President Donald Trump on Arab, Middle Eastern, and African affairs. The discussion, which also included Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty and Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad, focused on efforts to restore stability in the region.
According to the Egyptian presidency’s spokesperson, President El-Sisi emphasised the importance of a Libyan-led resolution to the ongoing crisis. He reiterated that Egypt has suffered the most from Libya’s prolonged instability and remains committed to supporting any credible political initiatives that could lead to national unity.
El-Sisi called for the formation of a unified Libyan government that enjoys legitimacy among the Libyan people and garners political backing from the House of Representatives, the High Council of State, and the Presidential Council. The president stressed that the key mission of such a government should be the simultaneous organisation of presidential and parliamentary elections.
The discussions also underlined Egypt’s continued role in facilitating political dialogue between Libyan stakeholders and its support for all efforts aimed at ending foreign interference and promoting national reconciliation.
Boulos, representing the US administration, expressed Washington’s appreciation for Egypt’s stabilising role in Libya and the broader region. He confirmed the United States’ keenness to coordinate closely with Egypt in efforts to restore peace and political order in Libya, ensuring that the country moves towards elections and long-term governance solutions.
