The United States Embassy in Libya has welcomed the formation of a ceasefire committee in Tripoli, launched under the supervision of the Presidential Council and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The move aims to stabilise the capital and prevent further outbreaks of violence.
In a statement posted on its official account on platform X, the embassy expressed support for the initiative and stressed the importance of reducing tensions and avoiding further escalation. It urged all parties to commit to a permanent ceasefire and to ensure the protection of civilians.
The embassy also emphasised the need for lasting security arrangements in Tripoli to support long-term peace and stability.
The ceasefire mechanism was launched on Sunday by the Presidential Council, acting as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The announcement was made during a meeting attended by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and UNSMIL head, Hanna Tetteh. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to contain recent unrest and restore calm in the capital.
During the meeting, the Presidential Council underlined the importance of coordinated efforts between military and security entities. It called for a unified approach to prevent renewed clashes and reinforce the role of the national army in safeguarding civilians and maintaining public order.
UNSMIL confirmed that the newly formed committee would focus on facilitating a permanent ceasefire, with particular attention to civilian protection and establishing sustainable security arrangements in Tripoli.
The initiative follows weeks of heightened tensions and violent clashes between armed groups in the capital, prompting growing concern from the international community over Libya’s fragile security landscape.
