The UK Embassy in Libya has firmly denied rumours that it has closed its premises in the capital Tripoli. In a statement issued on Thursday, the embassy described circulating reports about its departure as completely untrue.
According to the embassy’s official communication, a small number of staff have temporarily returned to the United Kingdom. However, it emphasised that the embassy remains open and fully operational under the leadership of the British Ambassador, supported by a substantial team of diplomats and officials.
“There are no plans to leave Tripoli during this challenging period,” the statement declared, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts and promoting stability in the Libyan capital. The embassy also highlighted ongoing cooperation with international partners as part of broader diplomatic efforts.
This clarification follows earlier statements from Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), which rejected claims of diplomatic evacuations from Tripoli. The Foreign Ministry confirmed last week that it had received no official requests for embassy withdrawals, and stressed that diplomatic activities in the capital are proceeding as normal.
The Ministry stated that “all embassies and missions continue to perform their duties without any notable changes,” aiming to dispel growing speculation amid recent tensions in the city.
The UK has been actively engaged in Libya’s political process, calling for peaceful dialogue and institutional unification. Its embassy, which reopened in Tripoli in 2022, has since played a key role in supporting electoral efforts and security cooperation with Libyan authorities.
