Egypt Evacuates Citizens Trapped in Libya Amid Growing Tensions

Egypt has evacuated 71 of its citizens from Libya as part of an emergency repatriation operation launched in response to escalating security tensions in Tripoli. The operation was carried out under the direct instructions of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its nationals abroad, particularly in conflict zones.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a special EgyptAir flight was dispatched to Tripoli to transport the group of citizens who had previously requested repatriation. These individuals had registered their details with the Egyptian Embassy in Tripoli and through the special operations room established by the ministry to monitor the unfolding situation.

The ministry confirmed that the National Committee on Libya coordinated all necessary logistical and diplomatic arrangements for the evacuation. The Egyptian government fully funded the cost of the repatriation flight, ensuring that citizens were not burdened with any financial obligations. This action underscores the state’s responsibility to protect its people during times of crisis, the ministry noted.

The evacuation comes amid renewed security unrest in the Libyan capital, where recent clashes between armed groups have raised concerns for the safety of foreign nationals. Egyptian authorities moved swiftly to provide support, leveraging diplomatic channels and emergency protocols to bring their citizens home safely.

The Egyptian Embassy in Tripoli, alongside the Foreign Ministry’s operations room in Cairo, continues to monitor the security situation closely and remains available around the clock to respond to requests or emergencies involving Egyptians still in Libya.

This move reflects Egypt’s broader foreign policy approach that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens living and working abroad, particularly in volatile regions. It also highlights the growing instability in Libya, where intermittent violence continues to disrupt efforts toward a lasting political solution.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to providing continuous support to Egyptians abroad and encouraged those still in Libya to remain in contact with the embassy and report any concerns or needs.
