Libyan Parliament Urges Reciprocal Measures After US Travel Ban

The Libyan House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee has urged the government to take reciprocal measures against US citizens following Washington’s decision to impose a travel ban on Libyan nationals.

In an official statement issued from Benghazi on 15 June, the committee expressed deep regret and strong dissatisfaction with the decision by US President Joe Biden to include Libya on the list of countries whose citizens are banned from entering the United States.

The committee called on the Libyan government to ensure the protection of Libyan citizens affected by the ban and to safeguard their rights and interests abroad.

Describing the move as unjustified and lacking objectivity, the committee noted that the decision overlooks Libya’s significant role in fighting terrorism on behalf of the international community. It emphasised that Libyan security forces have made substantial progress in restoring order, with many terrorist groups eliminated through national efforts and sacrifices.

The statement also pointed to the long-term consequences of the 2011 international intervention in Libya, arguing that the subsequent withdrawal left the country in chaos. It warned that the US decision risks undermining Libya’s reconstruction efforts and could deter foreign investment and expertise at a critical time.

Moreover, the committee highlighted the potential negative impact on economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations, warning that the travel ban could lead to a deterioration in bilateral relations.

In closing, the committee appealed to the US administration to reconsider its decision, stressing that maintaining cooperation and mutual respect is vital for future partnership and regional stability.
