On Monday, Libyan Acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour met with the UK Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Leo Docherty, in Tripoli to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation on shared political and regional goals.
The meeting, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on ways to deepen cooperation across several sectors, particularly supporting Libya’s political track and contributing to broader efforts aimed at restoring stability and unity across the country.
During the talks, Al-Baour welcomed the British delegation and emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between Libya and the United Kingdom. He acknowledged the UK’s continuous support for development, peacebuilding, and capacity-building initiatives in Libya. He also praised Britain’s position in the UN Security Council, especially its calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and its advocacy for lifting the blockade and allowing humanitarian aid into the besieged area.
For his part, Minister Docherty reiterated the UK government’s commitment to supporting Libya’s pursuit of peace, reconciliation, and democratic governance. He noted that Britain is eager to expand cooperation with Libya on the basis of mutual respect, shared interests, and long-term stability.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments, reaffirming the importance of a coordinated international approach to peace and security in the Mediterranean and North Africa.
This visit forms part of the ongoing engagement between the Government of National Unity and its international partners. It highlights a continued effort to reinforce Libya’s role as a stable and cooperative regional actor and to align on issues of mutual concern—from political reforms and institutional rebuilding to economic development and regional diplomacy.
