On Sunday, the Libyan Parliament confirmed that it has the sole right to represent the Libyan people, and state institutions. It noted that those who deny this, are committing a crime punishable by the current laws in the country.
In a statement, it confirmed that it was closely working on resuming dialogue, a ceasefire, and the protection of Libya’s neighbours.
The statement pointed out that only the parliament has the electoral legitimacy to represent the Libyan people, its components, electoral constituencies, and its historical regions. The statement also stressed that it is not permissible for any unelected entity to claim that it is representing the Libyan people.
The parliament’s statement affirmed the complete freedom of individuals and groups to form civil society institutions, in accordance with the constitutional declaration and state laws. It warned against any attempt that would threaten the unity of the Libyan state, and allow the return of foreign colonisation to the country.
It voiced its keenness to ensure that all Libyans are fully getting their rights, such as political participation and wealth sharing. It has also been calling for an end to the state of hostilities, and will continue to thwart any attempt seeking to divide the country.
