On Tuesday, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, held a meeting with the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer.

During the meeting, Sarraj and Maurer discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the GNA and the Red Crescent Committee.

In a statement, the GNA’s media office stated that the meeting dealt with the ICRC’s contributions in addressing the humanitarian situation due to the current crisis.
The delegation accompanying the ICRC’s president included the committee’s regional head in Africa, the head of the ICRC delegation in Libya, and the undersecretary of the GNA’s Ministry of Health, Muhammad Haitham.

During the meeting, the visiting delegation was briefed on the preventive and precautionary measures taken by the GNA, to curb the outbreak of COVID-19, especially in detention centres and prisons. The ICRC expressed its appreciation for the efforts made by the Tripoli-based government in this field.

The meeting also dealt with enhancing mutual coordination between the ICRC, the Libyan Red Crescent Society and the Ministry of Health on a number of issues. Al-Sarraj and Maurer also discussed displaced citizens, mine-clearance, and supporting the infrastructure in the most affected areas.
