On Saturday, the head of the High National Election Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, reiterated that elections remain the only legitimate and democratic path for Libya’s future.
He stressed that the commission is committed to protecting the rights of both voters and candidates, ensuring their voices are heard through the ballot box as the only means of peaceful power transfer.
Speaking during a tour of the HNEC office in Al-Zawiya and several polling centers in the surrounding municipalities, Al-Sayeh praised the resilience of staff and the determination of local communities to safeguard the electoral process.
He highlighted the role played by elders, community leaders, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens who, despite challenges, continue to support the completion of this national duty.
Al-Sayeh condemned attempts to obstruct elections or resort to violence, warning that such actions undermine Libya’s democratic aspirations.
He emphasized that neither intimidation nor attacks on electoral offices will prevent the commission from fulfilling its mission. “These acts will not deter us from serving the will of the Libyan people and advancing their democratic choice,” he said.
He also underlined the importance of local elections as a foundation for building legitimacy and trust between citizens and institutions. With more than two dozen municipal councils already elected, Libya is taking steps to restore governance at the community level, even as political deadlock continues at the national stage.
The electoral chief reminded Libyans that the ultimate goal is to pave the way for national elections, long delayed by political divisions. He affirmed that the HNEC is ready to oversee credible, transparent, and inclusive polls once the necessary constitutional and legal framework is finalized.
