Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) chairman, Emad Al-Sayah, met on Thursday in Tripoli with Jeremy Berndt, the chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Libya, to discuss international support for Libya’s electoral process and the challenges facing the country’s long-awaited national polls.
The talks reviewed the Commission’s recent successes, particularly the organization of municipal elections, which were widely seen as a test of its technical capacity.
The meeting then turned to the parliamentary and presidential elections, which remain stalled amid political disputes.
Al-Sayah highlighted the Commission’s readiness but stressed the need for further technical support to ensure transparency, credibility, and smooth operations once the legal and political frameworks are agreed.
Al-Sayah also welcomed US engagement and underscored the importance of strong international partnerships to help Libya move past its transitional period. He argued that credible elections are essential to achieving stability and democratic renewal after years of political division and institutional fragmentation.
For his part, Berndt reiterated Washington’s commitment to backing Libya’s electoral process and praised the Commission’s role in sustaining the democratic path despite repeated setbacks. He emphasized that technical assistance, training, and logistical support remain key to building confidence in Libya’s ability to hold free and fair elections.
