Chad Condemns Criminal Activity Along Borders with Libya

The Chadian government has strongly condemned the ease with which criminals are crossing borders into Libya and Niger, amid rising concerns over security in the Tibesti region. The statement comes after rumours circulated on social media about an imminent attack on civilians in the border area of Miski.

Several Chadian ministers addressed the situation directly in Miski, seeking to dispel misinformation and provide clarity on the government’s position. They emphasised that while the state intends to enforce law and order, it does not plan to target local populations.

Tibesti, a mountainous region straddling Chad and Libya, hosts lucrative gold mines that have long attracted miners, migrants, and criminal networks. These groups often operate outside state control, generating significant illicit profits while leaving the government without revenue. Chadian officials have highlighted ongoing efforts to assert state authority over these resources, including negotiations to regulate mining activities.

Minister of Regional Administration, Lyman Mohamed, stated that restoring state authority requires well-equipped forces capable of intervention when necessary, stressing that this approach is not a prelude to military action against civilians. Justice Minister Youssef Tom highlighted repeated human rights violations in the region, noting that perpetrators exploit the lawlessness to harm both people and the country’s reputation.

Officials collectively condemned any attempts to destabilise the area or undermine national unity, stressing that all actions contravening the law will face strict legal repercussions. They reiterated that Miski is under Chadian sovereignty, affirming their commitment to upholding human rights while combating criminal activity.

Chad’s response underscores the government’s determination to secure its borders and maintain peace in areas vulnerable to cross-border crime. The coordinated message from multiple ministries aims to reassure citizens and neighbouring countries that Chadian authorities remain vigilant in tackling illegal activities and ensuring the rule of law.
