Libyan Minister of Foreign Affairs Criticizes Those Equating Ceasefire with GNA Takeover in Libya

The Minister of Foreign Affairs for Libya’s Interim Government, Abdel-Hadi Al-Hwaij, criticized those calling both for a ceasefire and for the Government of National Accord (GNA) to take control of all Libyan territories.

Al-Hwaij said in a tweet: “They are living in a state of obsession and disconnection from reality… Unfortunately, hate speech does not build the nation; we want brave people who defend the homeland.”

He continued by saying: “They have to leave the Libyans alone, those who failed in the capital, Tripoli, even in managing the garbage problem, as well as electricity and liquidity in a country that has oil… and here they are today controlling cities and killing and shedding blood. Sayings must be accompanied by actions, otherwise what is said and issued will have no value.”

Libya has been marred in violence between competing forces, militias, and extremists since the toppling and killing of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The conflict now pits the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) against the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, for control of the country.
