The National High Commission for Elections (HNEC) has formally endorsed the names of 35 municipal mayors as part of the second group of local elections held this year. The announcement marks a significant step in Libya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local governance and decentralisation.
In its statement on Sunday, the Commission confirmed that the municipal elections were conducted in line with established laws and regulations. It praised the supervisory committees for their commitment and the substantial efforts made to ensure that the process was transparent and fair.
The certification of the new mayors reflects the Commission’s role in consolidating democratic practices at the local level, which remain essential for Libya’s wider political and institutional stability.
According to the Commission, the complete results of the electoral process will be officially submitted to the Ministry of Local Governance, in line with Article 74 of Executive Regulation No. 43 of 2023 governing municipal council elections. This step formalises the transition and grants the elected mayors the authority to assume their roles.
The newly certified mayors are expected to play a vital role in addressing community needs, advancing local development projects, and strengthening service delivery in their respective municipalities. Observers see the move as another milestone towards promoting accountability, decentralisation, and citizen participation across Libya.
The elections come at a time when Libya continues to navigate political divisions, making the reinforcement of municipal structures a cornerstone for local stability and future national reconciliation efforts.
