Libya’s national powerlifting team for athletes with disabilities has made history at the 2025 World Powerlifting Championships held in Cairo, Egypt, securing three medals on the opening day of the competition. The remarkable performance marks a defining milestone for Libya’s Paralympic sports movement, highlighting the nation’s growing international presence in adaptive athletics.

Rahaf Wanees Al-Haddar Shines with Double Gold in Cairo

Libyan champion Rahaf Wanees Al-Haddar delivered a stunning performance, capturing two gold medals — one in the 45kg category and another for the overall lift total. Her record-breaking achievement makes her the first Libyan female athlete ever to win two gold medals at an official world championship event.

Al-Haddar’s dominance against top global competitors drew admiration from the audience and officials alike, as she proudly raised Libya’s flag in the Egyptian capital, setting a new benchmark for women’s sports in the country.

Sufyan Bousta Claims Silver in Masters Category

Meanwhile, Libyan lifter Sufyan Bousta earned a silver medal in the 49kg Masters division, impressing judges and spectators with a series of successful lifts — first at 100kg and then 107kg — to secure a second-place finish. His result added another medal to Libya’s growing tally on the championship’s opening day.

Libya’s powerlifting federation hailed the results as a “historic achievement,” underscoring years of dedication, training, and international collaboration to develop the nation’s Paralympic talent.

The Libyan delegation continues to compete across multiple categories, aiming to add more medals and further cement Libya’s position among the top-performing teams in the world of para-powerlifting.
