The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced that municipal elections have officially begun across 16 cities in Libya, marking an important milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local governance and democratic participation.

Polling stations opened their doors at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and will remain open until 6:00 p.m., as voters in several regions cast their ballots to elect new municipal councils. The vote is being held under close organizational and security supervision to ensure transparency, integrity, and a smooth process.

The elections are taking place in the municipalities of Ejkherra, Awjila, Ubari, Kufra, Al-Qatroun, Al-Jufra, Al-Sharqiya, Jalu, Ghat, Al-Marj, Jardas Al-Abid, Al-Qarda Al-Shati, Gulf of Sidra, Brak Al-Shati, Adiri Al-Shati, and Al-Ghuraifa.

According to the HNEC, this phase represents the third stage of the municipal election program, which aims to renew local councils across the country in line with Libya’s electoral roadmap. The Commission emphasized that these elections are being conducted with strict adherence to international standards and reflect the Libyan people’s desire to enhance accountability and citizen representation at the local level.

The HNEC also announced that a new round of municipal elections will take place on October 20, covering ten additional municipalities, including Tobruk, Sirte, Benghazi, Sabha, and Tajoura. Preparations for these elections are already underway.

Observers say the municipal elections carry significant symbolic and practical importance, as they represent one of the few democratic processes uniting Libyans across divided regions. Despite ongoing political tensions, the elections are viewed as a vital step toward building institutional legitimacy and restoring trust between citizens and governing bodies.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to fairness, transparency, and professionalism in managing the process, while security authorities confirmed that all necessary measures are in place to protect voters and ensure a peaceful election day.
