The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the opening of voter registration for upcoming municipal council elections in 11 municipalities across the country. The registration process covers key cities and towns including Al-Abyar, Al-Jadida, Benghazi, Tajoura, Tokra, Sebha, Sirte, Suluq, Tobruk, Qasr Al-Jadi, and Qaminis.
In a statement, UNSMIL urged all eligible voters in these municipalities to take part in the registration process, emphasising the importance of active citizen participation in building legitimate and accountable local governance institutions. The mission highlighted that municipal elections are a vital step towards strengthening local democracy and ensuring that communities have a voice in the management of their daily affairs.
UNSMIL reiterated its full support for Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) in conducting transparent and credible elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people. It also encouraged local and national authorities to facilitate the process and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for voters and candidates alike.
The voter registration drive marks another milestone in Libya’s long and complex transition towards stability and democratic governance. Municipal councils play a critical role in providing public services, managing development projects, and enhancing accountability at the community level.
By opening registration in these 11 municipalities, the election process aims to reinvigorate local participation and rebuild public trust in democratic institutions. The mission reaffirmed that genuine local elections can contribute significantly to national reconciliation and help pave the way for broader political stability in Libya.
