The preparatory committee for the Libya–Africa Climate Summit, established by a decree from Speaker of the House of Representatives Aqeela Saleh (Decision No. 67 of 2025), held its first meeting on Tuesday at the Parliament headquarters in Benghazi. The session was chaired by Member of Parliament Rabia Abu Ras and attended by committee members Zayed Hadia and Abdulmonem Balkour, along with Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Ahmed Al-Hashash, who serves as the committee’s rapporteur.

During the meeting, members discussed initial arrangements for the upcoming summit, a major continental event aimed at strengthening Libya’s role in supporting African efforts to confront the challenges of climate change and promote pathways toward sustainable development across the continent.

The committee reviewed the overall plan for the summit, including proposed programs, main themes, and mechanisms for coordination among national institutions and related agencies to ensure full preparation for all stages of the event. A detailed timeline was also examined to define organizational, media, and technical responsibilities.

At the conclusion of the session, the committee emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to ensure the success of the summit and to highlight Libya’s leadership in advancing regional climate action. Members stressed that the event would contribute to shaping a unified African vision for sustainable growth and environmental resilience.

The committee also agreed to hold its second meeting in early December to finalize the implementation plan and approve the summit’s programs ahead of its official launch.

This initiative forms part of Libya’s broader strategy, led by the House of Representatives, to strengthen the country’s presence in regional and international forums and reaffirm its active role in addressing environmental, humanitarian, and economic issues linked to climate change.
