The Libyan city of Sirte has officially inaugurated the Bankina Fish Market, one of the largest modern fish markets in the region, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the marine wealth sector and support local economic development.

The opening ceremony took place on Thursday evening and was attended by the Deputy Minister of Marine Wealth in the Libyan government, senior officials from the National Development Agency, the Mayor of Sirte, the municipal coordinator for the marine wealth sector, representatives of service institutions, and large numbers of local residents.

Speakers at the event praised the National Development Agency for its role in advancing reconstruction projects across Sirte, highlighting the importance of investing in fisheries infrastructure to revitalise economic activity and improve livelihoods for fishermen and traders.

The newly opened market is a fully integrated commercial facility built on an area of 15,000 square metres. It includes 12 retail fish shops, each measuring 50 square metres, alongside a two-storey restaurant covering 800 square metres. The complex also features a parking area with capacity for 160 vehicles, supporting increased commercial traffic.

In addition, the project includes an administrative building spanning 165 square metres, equipped with an ice production plant and dedicated service facilities designed to meet the needs of local fishermen and market operators.

Officials said the project reflects ongoing efforts to modernise Sirte’s economic infrastructure and enhance the sustainability of the marine wealth sector, positioning the city as a key hub for fisheries and seafood trade along Libya’s coastline.

The opening of the Bankina Fish Market is part of a wider development strategy aimed at stimulating local economies, creating employment opportunities, and supporting food supply chains through modern, well-equipped commercial facilities.
