Jeremy Berndt, Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Libya, has visited the University of Benghazi as part of efforts to strengthen academic cooperation and support Libya’s reconstruction and development agenda.
Berndt was accompanied during the visit by the President of the University of Benghazi, Dr Ezzedine Al-Dersi, and Dr Aqila Al-Abbar, Director of International Cooperation at Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund.
The visit focused on reviewing ongoing projects aimed at upgrading the university’s educational infrastructure, which are being implemented under the supervision of the Development and Reconstruction Fund as part of broader plans to modernise higher education institutions across the country.
During the tour, Berndt and the accompanying delegation were briefed on the progress of maintenance and development works, current completion rates, and the main challenges facing the projects. Officials also outlined measures being taken to improve the academic environment and align university facilities with modern international standards for higher education.
The US diplomat praised the scale and pace of work underway, noting that the projects reflect a clear vision and consistent implementation. He commended the university’s leadership for its commitment to supporting the educational process and creating an academic environment that meets the aspirations of both students and faculty members.
Berndt stressed that investment in education represents a vital pillar of institutional development and highlighted the importance of international partnerships in supporting universities. He added that strengthening the higher education sector plays a crucial role in advancing stability, reconstruction, and long-term nation-building in Libya.
