The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, has welcomed the successful completion of municipal council elections held across several Libyan municipalities, describing the process as orderly, secure, and reflective of strong public awareness and civic responsibility.
In a statement, Saleh said the elections demonstrated citizens’ free will in choosing their local representatives within a sound legal and constitutional framework. He stressed that the calm atmosphere and disciplined organization underscored the growing maturity of Libya’s democratic practice at the local level.
The Speaker praised the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) for its role in preparing, supervising, and implementing the vote, highlighting its professional conduct and strict adherence to technical and legal standards. He said these measures ensured the integrity and transparency of the electoral process and allowed it to proceed in line with approved regulations.
Saleh also commended the Ministry of Interior and all security agencies for securing polling stations and safeguarding the electoral process. Their efforts, he said, created a secure environment that enabled citizens to cast their ballots freely and with confidence.
According to the Speaker, the success of the municipal elections represents a key pillar in strengthening administrative decentralization, enhancing local governance, and empowering municipalities to carry out their service and development responsibilities. He added that this progress aligns with the Libyan people’s aspirations for stability, institutional state-building, and the consolidation of the rule of law.
Saleh reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ full support for all upcoming electoral milestones, describing elections as the constitutional and legal pathway to renewing political legitimacy, achieving political stability, and advancing security, development, and prosperity across Libya.
MPs Participate in Third Group of Municipal Elections
Several members of the House of Representatives took part in the municipal elections under the third group. MP Yousef Al-Fakhri cast his vote in the municipality of Sloug, as polling opened on election day. The vote covered 311 polling centers across nine municipalities included in the third group of municipal elections.
Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Administration and Local Governance, Ahmed Al-Sharif, conducted an inspection tour of polling stations in Sebha, accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister of the government appointed by the House of Representatives and Minister of Defense, Ahmid Houma. The delegation also visited the headquarters of the Joint Security Operations Room overseeing the elections.
The delegation was received by the Director of the Security Directorate and Head of the Joint Security Room for the elections, Major General Khaled Al-Basta, along with senior Interior Ministry officials. Officials reviewed the security plan for polling stations, the level of coordination between security bodies, and the procedures in place to ensure the safety and integrity of the vote.
Government and security officials later carried out field visits to several polling centers in Sebha, assessing technical and logistical readiness, voter reception mechanisms, and accompanying security measures. Sebha alone hosted 32 polling centers, aimed at encouraging broad and transparent citizen participation.
Meanwhile, MP Al-Saleheen Abdelnabi also participated in the municipal elections in Tobruk, casting his ballot as polling opened, within the same third group framework covering 311 polling centers across nine municipalities.
