An explosion struck a gas cylinder repair workshop near Al-Jalaa Hospital in Tripoli on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, leaving several migrant workers injured, Libyan security officials said.
According to the Tripoli Security Directorate, the blast occurred inside a workshop used for repairing gas cylinders in a densely populated area close to the hospital. The incident resulted in multiple injuries among foreign workers, which were described as moderate.
Emergency services responded quickly, transferring the injured to nearby medical facilities to receive urgent treatment and first aid. Authorities confirmed that all necessary medical measures were taken to stabilize the victims.
The Tripoli city police station has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and is taking legal action in line with applicable regulations. Initial inquiries are focusing on safety standards and the legality of operating such workshops near residential neighborhoods and vital public facilities.
In a statement following the incident, the Tripoli Security Directorate renewed its warning against operating gas cylinder repair workshops inside residential areas or in close proximity to hospitals and other critical infrastructure. Officials stressed that these activities pose a direct threat to public safety, as well as to public and private property.
The security directorate urged business owners and workers to comply with legal requirements and operate only in officially approved locations, emphasizing that strict adherence to safety regulations is essential to prevent similar incidents and protect lives in the capital.
Gas-related accidents remain a recurring concern in urban areas of Libya, particularly where safety oversight is weak, prompting repeated calls from authorities for stronger enforcement and public awareness.
