France has reiterated its support for Libya’s House of Representatives and its efforts to organize simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, reaffirming its backing for a Libyan-led political process aimed at ending the prolonged transitional period.

According to Abdullah Blehaq, the official spokesperson of the House of Representatives, this position was conveyed during a meeting in Paris between Speaker of the House Ageela Saleh and Paul Soler, the special envoy of French President Emmanuel Macron to Libya.

Blehaq stated that Soler expressed France’s continued support for the House of Representatives as Libya’s legislative authority and for its role in advancing the legal framework necessary to hold national elections.

The French envoy stressed that restoring political legitimacy through elections remains a key priority for achieving long-term stability in Libya.

During the talks, Soler praised the outcomes of the Joint 6+6 Committee, describing them as an important consensus-based achievement regarding electoral laws.

He noted that the committee’s work represents a significant step toward bridging differences between Libyan institutions and establishing agreed-upon rules for presidential and parliamentary elections.

The French envoy emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and ensuring that the committee continues its work to address outstanding legal and political challenges. He underlined that sustained cooperation between Libyan institutions is essential to creating conditions conducive to free, credible, and inclusive elections.

For his part, Ageela Saleh reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to completing the constitutional and legal requirements needed to move the country toward elections. He stressed that the parliament remains open to dialogue and coordination with relevant national bodies to overcome obstacles that have delayed the electoral process in recent years.

Libya has not held national elections since the collapse of the 2021 electoral roadmap, making renewed international backing for legislative efforts a significant signal amid continued political uncertainty.
