On Thursday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi held a meeting with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell in Cairo.
During the talks, El-Sisi affirmed Egypt’s steadfast position in supporting a political solution in Libya away from any foreign interference, adding that “Egypt welcomes any positive and constructive steps that lead to a peaceful settlement, construction, and development”.
He also stressed Egypt’s support for the relevant international efforts. This includes all international envoys to Libya and relevant international conferences, most importantly, the Berlin Conference and the Cairo Declaration initiative.
Borrell confirmed that Egypt held a pivotal role in achieving peace in Libya. He hailed Egyptian efforts in solving various crises, that affect security and stability in the Mediterranean, including preventing illegal immigration, combating terrorism, and establishing peace in the Middle East.
“Started important visit to Cairo with profound exchange with President El-Sisi. Egypt plays a key role in the region, and we strive for bolstering relationship, and for further cooperation on issues of mutual interest. EU and Egypt are strong partners”, tweeted Borrell on Thursday.
On the issue of the peace process in the Middle East, it was agreed on the need to push collective international action, towards the resumption of negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. In order to reach a fair and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue, in accordance with international law.
