Libya’s Prime Minister Osama Hammad held an emergency coordination meeting with Saddam Khalifa Haftar, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, and Faraj Aqeem, Head of the Emergency and Rapid Response Committee, to assess the impact of a powerful weather system sweeping across several regions of the country.
The meeting reviewed detailed field and technical reports on the storm’s progression, its expected trajectory, and the damage recorded in affected areas. Officials evaluated the readiness of security forces, emergency services, and public institutions, as well as the effectiveness of contingency plans designed to mitigate risks and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential services.
Participants stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination between civilian authorities, military units, and emergency response teams to address challenges caused by strong winds, heavy dust, poor visibility, and potential flooding. Special attention was given to high-risk areas and communities already experiencing disruptions to transportation, electricity, and public services.
Based on the assessments presented, Prime Minister Osama Hammad issued an official decision extending the public holiday to include Wednesday and Thursday, January 21 and 22, 2026. The move was taken as a preventive measure to protect citizens, limit unnecessary movement, and reduce the likelihood of accidents or injuries linked to deteriorating weather conditions.
The government emphasized that the decision reflects its commitment to prioritizing public safety while allowing emergency agencies to operate at maximum capacity during the critical period. Authorities confirmed that emergency committees and security units remain on high alert and will continue monitoring developments until weather conditions stabilize fully.
Citizens were urged to follow official instructions, avoid non-essential travel, and cooperate with security and emergency personnel. The government reiterated that all necessary measures will be taken to safeguard lives and property, underscoring that public safety remains the top national priority amid ongoing weather challenges.
