The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has called for the immediate release of individuals detained during recent peaceful demonstrations in Tripoli, stating that it received numerous reports alleging arbitrary arrests carried out by security forces.
In a statement, the organization said that members affiliated with the Internal Security Agency, the Ministry of Interior, and the Intervention and Control Force under the Government of National Unity were involved in detaining citizens who participated in protests held in the capital overnight. According to the rights body, the arrests targeted individuals exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
The organization urged all security agencies implicated in the arrests to release those detained without legal grounds and to cease what it described as unlawful and repressive measures against peaceful demonstrators. It emphasized that freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest are protected under Libyan law and international human rights conventions to which Libya is a party.
The statement further held the Government of National Unity fully responsible for the safety and physical integrity of those reportedly detained. It warned that any mistreatment, harm, or denial of due process would constitute a serious legal violation and require accountability.
The organization stressed that peaceful protest is a legitimate civic tool through which citizens express their views and demands. It called on authorities to ensure that law enforcement operations remain within the boundaries of the law and that public freedoms are not curtailed under security pretexts.
The appeal comes amid recurring protests in Tripoli linked to political and economic grievances. Human rights groups have increasingly voiced concerns about the handling of demonstrations and the potential misuse of security powers.
The National Institution for Human Rights concluded by urging the government to reaffirm its commitment to civil liberties, guarantee transparency in security operations, and respect constitutional rights. It also called for investigations into any reported violations and for clear communication regarding the number of detainees and the legal basis for their arrest.
