Libya’s coast security authorities have deployed additional naval reinforcements to support ongoing efforts to tow a Russian tanker away from the country’s territorial waters, amid growing concerns over potential environmental risks.

The General Administration of Coast Security confirmed that the vessel is currently located about 62 nautical miles off the Libyan coast, with towing operations still underway as teams work to move it further offshore.

Authorities stressed that the immediate priority is to remove the tanker from any area where it could pose an environmental threat to Libya’s coastline. Once the vessel is secured in a safe location outside Libyan waters, a second phase will begin, focusing on unloading its cargo under controlled conditions.

The tanker is reported to be carrying approximately 450 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 250 tonnes of diesel, in addition to an unspecified quantity of liquefied natural gas. Officials indicated that part of the cargo may have already leaked, raising concerns about potential marine pollution.

The incident highlights ongoing risks associated with maritime transport in the Mediterranean, particularly when vessels carrying hazardous materials face technical or operational difficulties. Libyan authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to secure the tanker progress.
