Libyan authorities have intensified health monitoring and precautionary measures in the country’s southern regions amid concerns over the possible spread of the Ebola Virus Disease near Libya’s borders with Chad and Niger.

Health officials confirmed that no Ebola cases have been recorded inside Libya so far, while urging the public to rely solely on information issued by official medical institutions.

The Environmental Sanitation Office in Kufra said it had received reports indicating suspected Ebola infections in border areas between Niger and Chad. Authorities advised travellers to avoid areas affected by the outbreak and to comply with health guidance issued by medical agencies.

Officials noted that Ebola symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea, while some cases may develop into internal or external bleeding.

Social media platforms in Libya have also circulated warnings suggesting the virus could enter the country through irregular migration routes from neighbouring African states, particularly due to the presence of migrant populations in southern border cities such as Kufra.

However, the National Centre for Disease Control branch in Kufra stressed that Libya’s epidemiological situation remains “stable and safe,” denying reports of any confirmed Ebola infections within Libyan territory.

The centre called on citizens not to spread rumours or inaccurate information circulating online and emphasised the importance of following official updates from health authorities.

It added that Libyan health agencies are continuously monitoring regional and international developments in coordination with the World Health Organization as part of precautionary measures aimed at protecting public health and strengthening preparedness for any potential outbreak.

Concerns surrounding Kufra have grown because of its strategic location as one of the main transit points for irregular migration routes crossing the Sahara toward northern Libya and the Mediterranean coast.

The city regularly receives migrants arriving from countries including Chad, Niger and Sudan. It also hosts one of the largest migrant detention centres in southern Libya, increasing fears among residents about the potential spread of infectious diseases through continuous cross-border movement.
