Arab League Expects Comprehensive Libyan Agreement

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expects that the ongoing peace efforts in Libya will lead to a comprehensive agreement.

Aboul Gheit said that this is the only solution to reaching a transitional period, with legislative and presidential elections. He warned of the fragility of the situation, and that it could be subject to “regress” at any time.

The Secretary General stated, “We have witnessed over the past few months a number of important developments that have contributed, cumulatively and constructively, to resolving the crisis. The parties have showed their commitment to the ceasefire, and the healing of the Libyan dialogue. These are all developments that can really bring us closer to reach a comprehensive agreement to complete the transitional period, and its culmination in presidential and legislative elections.”

He said to the ministerial meeting of the International Follow-Up Committee on Libya, “Opportunities for success and steadfastness will not be available for the settlement we seek, unless the continuous violations of the arms embargo, and the continuous recruitment of military equipment and mercenaries stop.”
