The Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, held a telephone call with the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

Maas conveyed a message from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, urging Al-Sarraj to delay his resignation. The German top diplomat asked him to remain during the ongoing peace talks.

Al-Sarraj expressed his thanks and appreciation for the efforts of Chancellor Merkel to resolve the Libyan crisis, as well as for Germany’s effective role in achieving tangible progress, in this direction.

The conversation dealt with the results of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission’s (JMC) meetings within the military track adopted by the Berlin Conference. “Al-Sarraj reiterated the need for the arrangements for this agreement to ensure that Libyan cities and vital sites are not exposed to any threat in the future,” the GNA media office’s statement stated.

The two sides agreed on the importance of leading the political track meetings in November to presidential and legislative elections as soon as possible. They expressed concern about the interference of foreign powers seeking to share areas of influence in Libya. They also agreed that a solution needs to preserve Libya’s sovereignty and unity, when foreign interference stops.
