Turkish Journalist Arrested Over Libya

Muyesser Yildiz, a Turkish journalist, said that Turkish authorities jailed her after she wrote about Turkey’s role in Libya’s conflict.

Yildiz was detained 5 months ago on accusations that she revealed state secrets in two articles about Ankara’s military involvement in Libya. She also reported on the death of an intelligence officer there. “Instead of listening to me, I was put in jail without questioning,” she said.

Yildiz criticized the legal situation and the absence of justice in Turkey. She claimed that there is no longer any security or judicial authority, that can be trusted and resorted to.

“I am being charged due to the articles that I have written. Since there is a constraint order on my file, I do not exactly know what I am accused of. I have not committed any crime except practicing journalism,” Yıldız said during her hearing on 8 September, requesting her release.

Since 2016, Ankara has cracked down on opposition members, including on followers of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. More than 77,000 people have been jailed, and some 150,000 civil servants, military personnel, and others have been sacked or suspended.
