On Thursday, the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced the beginning of a law enforcement operation to impose security in the eastern city of Benghazi.

The General Command said in a statement that all military units of the LNA have now moved to support the Ministry of Interior in implementing the operation. This was launched by the Joint Security Committee formed under the direction of the Commander in Chief, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. The objective is to eliminate crime and arrest all perpetrators as well as outlaws, the LNA explained.

Last week, Haftar held a meeting with the Libyan Interim Government’s Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, Chief of General Staff, as well as security and military agencies to outline a plan for the security operation.

He emphasized the necessity of implementing all orders, within a specific period of time. He also stressed that all obstructers, negligent actors, and accomplices would be held legally accountable under his direct supervision. The security operation will also work to quickly arrest all wanted persons who are fuelling negative public opinion through hate speech.
