GNA PM Al-Sarraj to Resign After Libyan Political Dialogue Ends

The Government of National Accord (GNA) stated that elections will take place next year, even if the parties do not reach an agreement. It was revealed that the GNA Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj will hand over power after the dialogue ends, and an executive authority is chosen, according to Al-Arabiya.

Al-Sarraj had previously announced his resignation set for the end of October. He ultimately reversed his decision and remained in office “in order to ensure stability and to avoid any political vacuum.”

On Sunday, the UN-brokered political talks between Libyan rivals ended without reaching a firm agreement. The talks are over mechanisms for choosing a new government. The UN Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) Acting Head, Stephanie Williams, announced that political consultations would resume after a week. The meeting will be held via video conference.
