The German magazine “Der Spiegel” reported on Monday that Turkey prevented the German army from inspecting a Turkish transport ship suspected of transporting weapons to Libya.
Der Spiegel reported that Berlin’s move to inspect the suspicious cargo fell within the framework of the European Union’s Operation IRINI, which is meant to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya.
The primary goal of IRINI is to implement the arms embargo on Libya through the use of air, sea, and satellite assets. The operation supports the process of bringing stability and peace to Libya.
Forces that are part of IRINI have the ability to conduct inspections of ships on the high seas off the coast of Libya that are suspected of carrying weapons, materials, or equipment in violation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
